CCP Games announced that its new MMO, EVE Frontier, will be developed on the Sui blockchain. The Iceland-based studio said the move is part of its plan to create a scalable, player-driven world built on Web3 technology.
The game extends the EVE Online universe, which has run for over two decades with a focus on player economies and emergent gameplay. EVE Frontier takes that foundation into Web3 gaming, where in-game assets and systems are recorded on-chain.
Building On Sui
Sui is a Layer-1 blockchain developed by Mysten Labs. It uses a design that allows assets in games to be represented as distinct, verifiable objects with ownership recorded on-chain. CCP said that model fits how EVE Frontier tracks ships, bases, and resources across its universe.
Mysten Labs co-founder and CTO Sam Blackshear said EVE Frontier will use multiple tools from Sui’s ecosystem, including systems that manage in-game data and permissions. The collaboration marks one of the first large-scale MMO projects built on Sui’s infrastructure.
A Long-Term Web3 Plan
CCP began testing blockchain features under Project Awakening in 2022, signaling its interest in decentralized game systems. The studio said the goal is to create worlds that can grow and evolve with their player communities over time.
Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games, said the decision to use Sui reflects that long-term approach. “We want to build a universe that can expand through player interaction and endure over years of change,” he said in a statement.
What’s Next For EVE Frontier
CCP is currently porting the Founder Access build of EVE Frontier to Sui. The studio said testing will continue through 2025 as it integrates blockchain-based systems for in-game ownership and creation.
The company has not announced a release window or public test date. Once complete, EVE Frontier will join a growing list of Web3 games using blockchain infrastructure to manage digital economies and player-built content.
